Azaghal was formed in '95 by Narqath and Kalma under the name
Belfegor. One demo was released under this name ("Ancient
Gods of Evil").
In '97 the band changed the name to Azaghal and that's when they
recorded their first "real" demo, simply called "Reh.Demo".
The next demo was released in March '98 called "Noituuden
Torni" ("The Tower of Witchery"). That demo showed different
sides of Azaghal, introducing synths and more melodies to the
music for the first time. And for the last. In December '98 the
third demo "Kristinusko Liekeissä"
("Christianity in Flames") was released and it was again more
in the vein of the first demo, being just pure aggressive traditional
black metal performed for His glory.
Then Azaghal released a 7"EP in February '99. The EP was called
"Harmagedon". At the same year they
released a 12", full-length vinyl. The album is called "Mustamaa"
("Mordor") and is limited to 300 copies. Even rawer than the EP,
it features the most primitive material and production yet.
In 1999 Azaghal signed with the Kult label Evil Horde of Brasil
for two full-length CDs. The debut CD "Helvetin
Yhdeksän Piiriä" (The Nine Circles of Hell) is again a
step towards the direction of the EP, being a lot faster than
the 12" was. Death to Humanity!
Now comes their second release on Evil Horde Rec: "Of
Beasts and Vultures" which is another killer Extreme
Black metal release. Here you will find some new influences on
the band, but the sound pretty much the Azaghal way of making
music.
Azaghal has renewed the contract with Evil Horde Records for other
two albums. They already finished the works on the next album
which might be released in the summer/2003. And they are also
planning some special releases for next year, so keep an eye on
the band.
